Prerequisites

This document/website contains the methods used for sampling in The Program on Governance and Local Development’s urbanization project.

0.1 Study Area

The study includes the following areas:

  • The border area between Kenya and Tanzania.
  • The border area between Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia.
  • The three capitals Dar es Salaam, Lusaka, and Nairobi.

0.2 Data

To replicate the method described here, the following geospatial vector and raster files are necessary:

  • WorldPop raster data for Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia
  • Administrative spatial polygons for all four countries from GADM
  • Lakes spatial polygons from Natural Earth

0.3 geosampling package

The geosampling package was created to simplify the process and has the necessary functions needed.
